Picking The Right Toothbrush

Picking the Right Toothbrush

A toothbrush is one of the most essential tools used for good oral hygiene. Using a toothbrush cleans our teeth and gums, helping us maintain a healthier mouth. But did you know that the type of toothbrush you choose is also essential to your oral health?

From the size of the toothbrush head to bristle softness, there is a toothbrush for everyone based on their oral health needs.

General Tips for Choosing the Right Toothbrush

Keep in mind these certain characteristics that you should look for when choosing your next toothbrush.

Size of the Toothbrush Head

The size of the toothbrush head is important as it will allow you access to all surfaces of your teeth. If your toothbrush head is too large, it may be difficult to maneuver them to clean hard-to-reach areas, such as your back molars.

For young children, brushes should have a head length of 15 mm to 19 mm, and for older children, 22 mm. The standard size for an adult is roughly half an inch wide and one inch tall.

Bristle Types

You can usually find extra soft, soft, medium and hard options when it comes to toothbrush bristles. Most dentists recommend choosing a toothbrush that has soft bristles. However, choosing which bristle works best for your teeth depends on how vigorously you brush your teeth and the strength of your teeth.

Most people believe that a hard-bristled toothbrush is more effective when it comes to removing plaque and stains from the teeth. However, that is not always the case. In fact, hard bristle toothbrushes can damage your gums and tooth enamel.

If you have sensitive teeth or gums or are recovering from a dental procedure, choosing an extra soft or soft toothbrush may be best.

Replace Your Toothbrush

With time, your toothbrush bristles will become worn out, which is why it is important to replace your toothbrush every three months. When the bristles become frayed, they won’t maintain their performance and won’t reach the spots between your teeth and along the gum line.
