Top Signs Your Child Should See an Orthodontist

Oral health is one of the most important aspects of our overall well-being. As we age, our bodies change, and our teeth are no different. While visits to the dentist play a significant role in maintaining your child’s oral hygiene, there may come a time when you need to consult an orthodontist.

5 Reasons to See an Orthodontist

One of the best ways to determine if your child needs orthodontics is to have their teeth and gums evaluated during their regular dental visits. In addition to this, there are several signs that may indicate the need to see an orthodontist. If you notice any of the following signs in your child, it is essential to schedule an appointment with an orthodontist as soon as possible.

1. Crowded Teeth

Having crowded teeth may cause a number of problems, such as difficulty brushing and flossing. This increases the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, cavities, and other oral health issues. Crowded teeth may also contribute to a misaligned jaw causing other issues such as headaches or pain when chewing. Orthodontics work to straighten and properly space the teeth to make them easier to clean and maintain.

2. Misaligned Jaw/Bite

A misaligned jaw may stem from a number of causes, such as temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ), trauma or an injury to the jaw, and genetics. If your child has an overbite, underbite, or crossbite, it is likely they will need to see an orthodontist for treatment. Leaving a misaligned jaw untreated may lead to serious oral health issues down the line. Since the jaw is still developing during childhood, this is the best time to have it corrected.

3. Difficulty Chewing or Speaking

When teeth are not properly aligned, it may be difficult for your child to chew or speak properly. If you notice that your child is having difficulty speaking clearly or chewing their food, an orthodontist may be able to help. They will evaluate the situation and determine what type of treatment is necessary for your child.

4. Early or Late Loss of Baby Teeth

Normal tooth loss typically begins around the age of six, when the first baby teeth start to come out. Early tooth loss, whether from an injury or decay, may affect how your child’s permanent teeth grow in. On the other hand, late tooth loss may also cause problems with the eruption of permanent teeth by crowding them or making them too far apart. Therefore, early or late loss of baby teeth may be an indication that your child needs orthodontic treatment.

5. Teeth Grinding

Also called bruxism, teeth grinding is a condition that affects both adults and children. Clenching, grinding, or gnashing of the teeth may cause damage to your child’s smile. Some people clench or grind their teeth in their sleep, so you may not be aware of this until your child sees an orthodontist. Having teeth that are misaligned can make grinding worse.

At What Age Are Orthodontics Most Effective?

Many orthodontic treatments are most effective when all of the permanent teeth have erupted, which typically happens around age 12. However, at Abra Dental, we recommend scheduling your child’s first orthodontic appointment by age seven. During this time, your child’s teeth and jaw are still developing, making it the ideal time to evaluate any current or potential alignment issues and start treatment if necessary. Early intervention may reduce the length and complexity of treatment needed down the line.
